Mary Joyce is a leader in automotive mobility and has served as the global vice president and general manager for Mobility and Critical Systems at UL Solutions, a global leader in applied safety science. Her work in engineering, safety, and environmentally friendlier technologies has contributed to the development and growth of automotive mobility and safety, an important field in the rapidly expanding field of self-driving vehicles and other new automotive technologies. 

Joyce was born and raised by an automotive family in Detroit, Michigan, where her father worked for Ford as a financial analyst. After graduating from St. Clement High School, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and a master’s degree in computer electrical engineering from Oakland University. She landed her first job at Chrysler in 1999 writing code and held engineering positions in powertrain, calibration, electronics, and software development. In 2002, she received the Walter P. Chrysler Technology Award – the highest technology honor at Chrysler – for alternate fuel algorithm development and implementation.

As a mother of four looking for more job flexibility, Joyce started two businesses. In 2000 she founded and served as CEO for Nicayla Enterprises Inc, an app development and research consulting firm. Three years later, Joyce established GregRobert Enterprises LLC, an e-commerce and distribution network company, where she was the CTO. In 2011, she joined CONTROLTEC, LLC, a company originally contracted for development by Nicayla, as head of Software and Technology in the Analytics Division. There, she managed the design, development, and deployment of CT-ENERGY ™, an application focused on meeting fuel economy and greenhouse gas regulations.  

Joyce rejoined Chrysler in 2013 as senior manager of Electrical in the Fiat division, where she led the successful launch of the Pacifica PHEV (electrified hybrid) minivan and began working with self-driving automotive technology. By 2016, Chrysler promoted her to a role in Program Management and Operations as the NAFTA head of Global Vehicle Planning. From 2017 to 2019 she served as vice president of Transportation Testing Services North America at SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection, and certification company.

In 2019, UL Solutions recruited Joyce for a role as vice president and general manager of the Automotive Division. The next year, she became global vice president and general manager of Automotive and Mobility and in 2021, landed her position as global vice president and general manager of Mobility and Critical Systems. She also has served as an advisory board member for EnerTech Capital and is on the California Mobility Center’s board of directors. Joyce is passionate about making people’s lives better, upholding environmental stewardship, and supporting other women in pursuit of careers in the engineering and automotive industry. 

With her extensive experience in many roles and wide-ranging skills that include cross-functional team leadership, management, strategy, innovation, and negotiation, Joyce is at the helm of the automotive mobility industry, well positioned to continue to lead important developments in safety and technology for this rapidly growing field.
