The grandson of Toyota Motor Corporation founder Kiichiro Toyoda, Akio Toyoda joined the company in 1984 after earning degrees from Keio University in Japan and Babson College in the United States. Over the following decades, he held leadership roles across manufacturing, product development, and global operations, gaining hands-on experience throughout the company before being appointed President and CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation in 2009. Toyoda assumed leadership during one of the most challenging periods in Toyota’s history, including the global financial crisis and large-scale vehicle recalls. Under his leadership, Toyota strengthened quality controls, revitalized its product lineup, and restored global confidence in the brand. He also steered Toyota through rapid technological shifts, expanding investments in electrification, hydrogen fuel-cell technology, advanced safety systems, and connected mobility solutions.
A passionate driver and racer known by his motorsport alias “Morizo,” Toyoda has championed the idea that cars should inspire emotion as well as provide mobility. His influence led to the revival of performance-oriented vehicles such as the GR (Gazoo Racing) lineup, reconnecting Toyota with automotive enthusiasts while reinforcing the importance of vehicle development through motorsport.
Beyond product development, Toyoda has advocated for a multi-path approach to reducing carbon emissions, emphasizing practical and scalable solutions across different global markets while encouraging innovation in electric, hybrid, and alternative fuel technologies.
Through his leadership, Toyota evolved from a traditional automaker into a broader mobility company focused on safety, sustainability, and innovation. Akio Toyoda’s tenure has left a lasting mark on the global automotive industry, shaping how manufacturers balance technological progress with driving passion and customer experience.
